New to Medicare? Start Here.

Navigating Medicare for the first time can feel overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be. At Health Care Choice, we guide you step-by-step through the essentials so you can make informed, confident choices about your health care.

The ABCs of Medicare

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people aged 65 and older, and for certain younger people with disabilities. It is divided into several parts:

Part A

Hospital Insurance: Covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

Part B

Medical Insurance: Covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

Part C

Medicare Advantage: An alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies that includes Part A, Part B, and usually Part D.

Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage: Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs.

When and How to Enroll

Most people first become eligible for Medicare at age 65. Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) begins 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. You can enroll online through Social Security, or we can assist you with the process.

What Are Your Coverage Options?

Once you’re enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B, you have two primary paths to choose from:

1. Original Medicare + Medicare Supplement + Part D

– You keep Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
– You add a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan to cover out-of-pocket costs
– You add a stand-alone Part D plan for prescription drugs

2. Medicare Advantage (Part C)

– All-in-one alternative to Original Medicare
– Often includes prescription drug coverage (Part D)
– May offer extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and wellness programs

Need Help Choosing?

We’ll help you compare your options based on your doctors, prescriptions, budget, and lifestyle. Our goal is to simplify the process and help you feel confident in your choice.
